Why should I take a supplement?

If your diet is consistently "ideal" or "optimal" you may not benefit from supplements, but recent research shows that many people do benefit greatly from supplementing their diet with vitamins, minerals, other nutrients and herbs. Nutritional supplements especially benefit people who are over 55 years of age, are following weight loss diets, have "hit or miss" diets, are lacking generous amounts of vegetables, fruits and whole grains or are taking medications that may deplete or inhibit the absorption of certain nutrients. 

Can I take supplements in place of a meal?

Please remember that vitamin supplements won't compensate for a poor diet - but they can help fill nutritional gaps in a good diet.  Your objective should be to eat healthy, well balanced meals that come from different sources and are geared toward you rspecific nutritional needs.

What if my medical condition or medications change while I'm taking supplements?

You should consult your physician first and then you can take the supplement advisor questionnaire again to update your recommendation. 

What if I miss taking a supplement dose?

Ideally, you should take your supplements as directed.  If the supplement is one a day it is good to take the pill in the morning with breakfast.  If the directions say to take two or three a day be sure you are taking the supplement with a meal and if you cannot take it with you meal make sure you eat a snack. 

Should I ever 'double up' on my supplement dose?

It is possible to take toxic amounts of certain nutrients if you “double-up.”  We recommend that you take the vitamins as directed on the bottle.

Should I refrigerate my supplements?

No. Store your supplements in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and heat. Do not refrigerate.

What is the best food or drink to take with my supplements?

You want to make sure you are eating a reasonably sized meal that contains fat with each dose. This will aid in your body digesting and absorbing the nutrients while also reducing discomfort. Examples of foods that contain fat include; oils, nuts, seeds, dairy, avocado, fish, and granola. Also drink plenty of fluids, preferably water.

Should I take supplements before or after I exercise?

You can take your vitamins before or after you exercise. This largely depends on when you eat.  If you feel you maintain a better workout when taking your supplements beforehand, then continue doing so just be sure to eat a snack that contains some fat source before working out.  A good example would be eating a granola bar, ½ cup of almonds or a cup of yogurt.

What should I do if I've been experiencing stomach issues since taking supplements?

Stomach discomfort can be one of the most common side effects of taking supplements. To address this, be sure you are consuming a meal with each dose.  Sometimes it is simply the amount of food consumed that makes the difference. You may also need to remove certain supplements one at a time and see if your symptoms change. If this makes a difference after 1 week restart the supplement that you think is causing the problem and reevaluate.  If the above suggestions do not help, consult a physician.

Is it ok to take these supplements with vitamins I already take?

Your recommendations are based on the assumption that you are not taking any other dietary supplements. In order to prevent overdosing, we recommend that you do not take any other nutrition/herbal supplements in conjunction with our recommended program.

I'm seeing a doctor for an existing medical condition. Should I consult him/her before I take supplements?

Be sure to check with your health care provider before starting any supplement particularly if you are being monitored for a specific medical condition.

What happens if a new study comes out that claims certain supplements are bad for my health?

If you have any questions or concerns about a recent study you read or heard about that might have an impact on your supplement program, please feel free to call and speak with our staff at Grado Supplements. Otherwise, discuss your concerns with your health care provider. 

How long will it take for me to feel the effects of the supplements?

It is recommended that you remain on a daily vitamin and supplement regimen for at least 90 days to fully realize the positive health effects.  Symptoms from a certain disease processes that have occurred from a lack of adequate nutrition can take years of supplementation for the body to totally restore itself, yet most people will see results in a much shorter time.
